PROJECT INFORMATION & FAQs What is the Thru the Valley project? The Thru the Valley project involves the widening and reconstruction of I-75 from I-275 (on the north) to Paddock Road (on the south).
Project Goals
How did this project begin? Thru the Valley was spawned from the North South Transportation Initiative (NSTI). The NSTI, which wrapped up in October 2003, included a massive transportation study of 85 miles of the I-75 corridor, from the Ohio River to the City of Piqua in Miami County. The result of the NSTI was a preferred program of improvement projects. Thru the Valley was determined to be one of the most critical projects on the list. As a result, this project was slated as a top priority. Work began on this project in May 2004.
Who is sponsoring this project? The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) through their District 8 office is the project sponsor. The project team consists of ODOT Central Office, ODOT District 8 and the consultant team.
How do I provide input or find out information?
Is there funding for this project? Yes. In May 2004, $149 million was secured through federal, state and local funds.
What step is the project currently in? As of February 1, 2008 the Thru the Valley Project is in Step 7 of ODOT’s 14-Step Project Development Process. This step involves refined design plans and environmental studies for the Preferred Alternative.
What is the project schedule? Due to rising inflation and other costs, construction of the Thru the Valley Project has been split into phases: Phase 1 Remaining Phases
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What section of I-75 is being studied? The Thru the Valley project area begins at mile post 10.10 near the Paddock Road intersection in the City of Cincinnati and continues for approximately 7.3 miles to the I-275 Interchange.
Why is this project necessary? This project is necessary to:
What will this project produce? This project follows ODOT's 14-Step Project Development Process to identify, assess and analyze the transportation problems, evaluate alternative solutions, and recommend a preferred alternative, which will be implemented.
When will the recommended improvements be constructed? Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2010 and last through Fall 2013. Visit the Project Information page to view the timeline for the project.
Will any property be acquired to construct the recommended improvements? The Right-of-Way acquisition process will not begin until late 2008. Some of the recommendations may eventually require the acquisition of property. Owners of land needed for transportation improvements will be notified early in the process, and fair market value will be paid for any property that is acquired. For more information about the Right-of-Way process visit http://www.dot.state.oh.us/real/ and click on frequently asked questions.
Will the public have input to the project? Yes! Several public and stakeholder meetings will be held in the coming months. Meeting dates will be posted in the local media and updated on the Web site when they become available.
What is the cost of the project? Currently, there is funding available for construction in the amount of $149 million.
Where does the money come from for the project? These funds were secured through the Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC) and ODOT's Bridge and Pavement Funds. The TRAC consists of nine members and has the authority to select new construction projects, to modify the selection process and to hear appeals from the public concerning Major/New projects and the project selection process. To learn more about the TRAC visit http://www.dot.state.oh.us/trac/.
Are there plans to make easier access to I-75? The recommended solution will include changes to access points along the corridor allowing for safer and more reliable highway access.
Will there be impacts on traffic during construction? Yes. Traffic will be disrupted with temporary lane closures, and restrictions, though improvements will be designed with the attempt to minimize construction impacts. Every attempt will be made to maintain three lanes of traffic in each direction throughout the duration of construction.
How many lanes will be added to I-75? Four lanes will be added to I-75 with an additional fifth auxiliary lane where warranted.
No. However, although no major realignment of I-75 is being considered, one of the conceptual alternatives currently under consideration involves combining the northbound and southbound sections in the area around Lockland and Arlington Heights.
Why do the alternatives propose that the Galbraith Road left exit from I-75 northbound be closed in the future?
What is ODOT's 14-Step Project Development Process? ODOT's new Project Development Process (PDP) is an effort to streamline the planning and environmental processes, improve the quality of construction plans and reduce delays in overall project delivery. View the 14-Step process here (.pdf).
